Heartwood is
character education. It is an attitude...not a
program. Heartwood is taught from a Head,
Heart, and
Hand approach. This approach stresses the
idea that we know the good in our head, have
the good in our hearts, and then do the good with our
hands. Heartwood focuses on eight attributes
that serve as a strong foundation for conflict
resolution and peacemaking. These attributes provide common
ground in the form of values understood and
shared by students and their peers. The eight
attributes that students and staff focus on
are Faith, Respect, Love, Justice, Courage,
Loyalty, Honesty and Hope. Each month a
different story will be read along with activities
that reinforces each attribute. We
encourage parents to talk with your children
about the attributes, stories, and activities.
Family support is an important part of Heartwood!
Everyone needs to work together to set a good
example and help our children
understand and model the values that make them
better people.
