Academic Activities
Academic Team
The top scorers on a qualifying test in the 7th and 8th grades form two teams that practice academic curriculum and trivia for six to eight weeks. The two St. James teams then compete with other local Catholic schools at La Salle High School's Academic Bowl.

Bible Bowl
The Bible Bowl is a trivia competition all about the Bible.  Students study their Bible knowledge and have a chance to show off all they know at a competition.

Enrichment Program

Each spring the St. James School Advisory Commission offers after school enrichment classes to students in grades 1-8. These classes allow students to explore different interests and hobbies including babysitting, animals, karate, photography, art, and reading, just to name a few.

Geography Bee
Much like a traditional spelling bee, students have a chance to go against the other geography buffs in the school to compete in a school-wide competition to crown someone the geography champion.

Leadership Council
Each year, incoming eighth grade students are selected to be a part of the 8th Grade Leadership Council.  The year begins with a overnight at school. The students participate in team building games and activities that promote leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.  From there, the purpose of the St. James Leadership Council is to develop the leadership skills of those involved and to further promote the school's mission through work in community outreach, living our faith, and the promotion of school spirit.

LEGO Robotics Club
Students in grades five through eight have an opportunity to join the LEGO Robotics Club.  This is more than just playing with LEGOs.  Students have to build a robot and program it to complete several complex challenges.  This is a great hands-on math and science competition.

Power of the Pen
Power of the Pen is a creative writing competition where students hone their writing skills to become better communicators. The Ohio program is designed for 7th and 8th graders to write interscholastically with a variety of prompts. Team members have the opportunity to compete at district, regional, and state levels.  St. James writers often compete at high levels.

Speech Team
Students in grades six through eight have the opportunity to participate in a speech competition.  The categories of competition are humorous and serious dialogue, humorous and serious monologue, as well as storytelling.  The team meets periodically from November until the competition date held in the Spring.

Spelling Bee
Students in grades five, six, seven, and eight have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Eligible students must win at their grade levels in order to participate in the school-wide competition.  The winner of this competition has the chance to represent St. James School at the Regional Spelling Bee.  The champion of this event wins an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Student Banking Program
St. James students may participate in the Pawket Savers Banking Program sponsored by the St. James Credit Union.  On a bi-weekly basis students may deposit money into their accounts in order to learn the value of saving and budgeting money.
